23 Things I've Learned By 23

Lessons are so much more valuable then we used to realize. As a kid, you learned new things in school every day; English, Math, History, Science - but you never recognized the life lessons you learned. As you grow up you start to learn things that will impact how you live your life and the person you are becoming. In fact, we are all formed by what we've been through, the people we have met, and the places we have been.

One of my favorite sayings is 'It's either a blessing or lesson' because so many life events start to happen and not everything will be good. Not everyone will stay in your life. Not everything will make you happy, in fact there are things that will make you sad or break your heart. BUT, all these things stick with us - all these moments teach us certain lessons to carry with us and apply to life.

I can say I learned the most throughout college. Then I learned even more in my transition from college to the real world. Everything that has happened has taught me something, everyone I was or am friends with have taught me lessons, and every place I have been to has taught me something. In fact, traveling will teach you a million lessons in itself.

Here are my 23 lessons I've learned:

1. Get rid of negative people.

This can be one of the hardest things to do. If they aren't helping you become a better person and are only bringing negativity into your life, CUT THEM OFF. Life goes on and there will be more people that will come into your life.

2. Act with kindness in your heart.

Be nice. Recognize other people and treat them with kindness. You don't know what battles other people are facing. Whether it's a smile, saying hi, asking how someone is doing, giving someone a compliment - little things often mean the world to people and you don't know it.

3. you are capable of so much more than you think.

Your only limit is you. You are the only person who will hold you back in life. You are capable of whatever you set your mind to. If you have a goal, work hard and accomplish it - you can. If you have a dream, chase it and don't stop until you are there.

4.Spend your money on experiences.

You start to learn the value in experiences and being with people rather than surrounding yourself with materialistic things. You do not NEED to have the latest and greatest of everything. Spend money on being out and trying new things or adventuring with your friends.

5. IT'S OKAY TO FAIL.

You may not always succeed at first, but the important thing is that you never give up. Failure is a part of success and without failing sometimes, you might never learn how to succeed.

6. don't BE SCARED.

It is easy to be scared of moving forward in life. Sometimes it means moving, getting a new job, falling in love, and meeting new people. Don't let fear hold you back from something that can be so good. If you let yourself be scared of everything or scared of getting hurt, you are going to miss out on some amazing moments in life.

7. your friends care just as much from a distance.

Life takes us in different directions. Especially after college, you are going to move states away from friends. That doesn't mean they love you any less or don't want to know about your life. We all get busy and when we can, we catch up like nothing has changed.

8. it's okay to do things alone.

Be independent. Learn to live your life on your terms. Don't be scared to do something or go somewhere because you are doing it alone. There is something so freeing about having time for yourself and experiencing things in life by yourself.

9. don't lose your happiness at the extent of others.

You don't have to and physically can not please everyone. Don't let go of your happiness to make others happy.

10. learn to say no.

You don't have to say yes to everyone and everything. If you can't do someone a favor, the world will keep turning and they will find someone else. This is something I still struggle with but hey, at least I recognize it right?

11. leave fomo in college.

FOMO might be the dumbest thing we have created as a society. The sad part is, we do feel that way too often and finally someone gave it a word. Leave that fear in the past, stay in on a Friday night, and if you can't make brunch with the girls there will be another brunch. Sometimes you have to say no and you can't be involved in everything.

12. start saving now.

You'll thank yourself later. I started a little late in the game but let me tell you have amazing it is to put money aside and not touch it. To know you will have an advantage later in life or have money to fall back on if you want to travel somewhere. It is a great feeling.

13. embrace meeting new people.

Stop being scared or too awkward to talk to people. After college it is a million times harder to meet anyone so learn to break your comfort zone and make a new friend.

14. value your opinion.

Speak up and stop holding in your thoughts. Your opinion is just as important as anyone else's so don't be quiet. You may even find other people agree and think the same as you do.

15. relationships are a two way road.

You can't force a relationship and if you are the only one putting in effort there is a problem. If someone wants to be in your life, they will be there. It will get tiring trying so hard to keep something that isn't there.

16. do the things you love.

Do what makes you happy. Don't waste moments when you can be enjoynig them. Live your life doing things that make your heart feel alive and happy. If you stop making time for these things, you will see how unhappy you will get real fast. Don't get consumed by the difficulties in life - there is always time.

17. life isn't always easy.

In fact, it's hard. There will be difficult seasons in your life. There will be hills and even mountains you will have to climb. The journey is where you learn and appreciate moments that will soon become memories. Eventually you'll get to the top of your mountain and the view will make it worth it.

18. dreams demand hustle.

You have to work for what you want. Nothing is handed to you and if you want something bad enough the only way to get it, is to work hard for it.

19. take care of yor body.

Go to the gym. Start to eat healthier foods. Cook more and stop eating out. Do a face mask every now and then. Have a spa day or a day to yourself to relax. Don't push off what your body needs because life is moving so fast.

20. keep your family close.

Family are the people you do not get to choose in life but they will always be there. You will love them and dislike them at times. Probably find them annoying and intrusive in your life, but at the end of the day - they care for you not for anything in return, but because they are your family.

21. don't settle.

Realize your worth and don't just settle because you're tired of waiting. Whether its that guy or girl, that job you're waiting for - be patient. Don't take the first thing that comes along because you don't want to wait or you're lonely. Respect yourself enough to know your worth.

22. try new things.

There is a world full of new places, new foods, new things you've never done before. Open your mind to trying things you've never tried. Experience life and experience the world around you.

23. be yourself.

The most important. Never try and be something you are not to please people. Embrace who you are - every silly, awkward, weird, beautiful part makes you who you are. There is no other person in this world made like you, BE YOU. Don't try and be anyone else.
