WINTER DEPRESSION IS REAL

You wake up, it's dark outside. You go to work, sometimes it's still dark out. You come home from work, IT'S DARK OUTSIDE. There’s a theme here.




Winter is not my favorite season because I believe there is a bit of a depressed state that comes with this time of year. If you work full time on a 9-6 schedule then you don't get to experience the light of day 5/7 days of the week. There are beautiful parts of the winter, but I don't think this is one of them. Personally, I thrive with the extra sunlight summer brings.


I think we can all agree- you feel lazy, less motivated, not as ambitious, and the days drag on. You don't necessarily want to do anything when you get home because it's dark outside. It feels like it's bedtime at 6pm and quite frankly we start acting like it's bedtime at 6pm. The day feels done when there is so much time to experience more life.


It’s almost as if we are stuck in a rut for 3 months and one day we suddenly start to come back to life. Now besides the dark, you have the cold which can make certain things miserable. You have to bundle up with 10 layers and if you forget one, you’re screwed. The frigid air and bad weather some days can really change your entire day, any plans you might have had, and bring you back to your bed or couch under a huge blanket where you will remain for the rest of the day.


I don't know about you, but I don't want to live that life. We can't choose to be upbeat every day in this time of year but we can choose to make the best of the days we can. We can choose to try and make it different.


How to experience winter a little bit more:


when At WorK


TAKE A WALK MIDDAY

Get out in the fresh air even if it is just for five minutes. It can be so hard throughout your day, especially at work which is the most necessary time to get some sun. Whether you go out for lunch, go get a coffee, or even just take a walk and sit for a minute. Break up your busy, stressful day and breathe!


TAKE A PERSONAL DAY

Corporate America sucks so TAKE ALL THE DAYS! If you have personal days, take the break and play hooky! Use it to hit the spa, relax, have a day to yourself, or even to just not have to stress. Stress + darkness + exhaustion + no time = a very unhappy you. Take the opportunities as they come to have a day off.


WORK FROM HOME

Now a days we have our entire job at our finger tips. If you have wifi- you can work anywhere. Pick a day you're not too busy and work remotely just to get out of the office and change up your atmosphere.


AT HOME


GET OUT ON THE WEEKENDS

Quit staying in because it's cold out. Not every day needs to be a lazy day. Get out of bed and deal with the walk to your car and then go experience something that doesn't require you being outside. When we cave to just staying home in bed, that fuels our low ambition, less motivated mindsets.


DO ALL THE WINTER SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES

Don't let the season pass you by because you don't want to go out in the cold. There are things that you can't really do any other time of the year. Go ice skating, try snowboarding or skiing, take a trip up to the mountains & find a cute air b&b, check out the winter wonderlands in the city (Bryant Park is my fav), sledding, snowball fights, & anything else that you can find. There are beautiful lights to look at and a beauty that can only be found in these few months.
